Chapter Five: When the Blind Man Discovers That He is Blind…
It's cold and dark here. Time seems eternal, apathetic, and lonely. My body twitches as the poison tears through my blood vessels with red hot claws and rends at my sanity with a vengeance. There, in the distance, is a pin point of light. Shall I go toward it? Or shall I just float here in this space of pain?
Gallows' mind slowly floated toward the hovering, seemingly misplaced, point of light.
Something to fight the dark. It's too dark here…
He was so close now, he felt the warmth of the light rip asunder the darkness' cold, unrelenting, grip.
He closed his eyes and let the warmth envelop him.
"Gallows.." Came a soft, feminine, voice from afar. Gallows slowly opened his eyes and blinked as the sun turned the person into an illuminated silhouette.
"Unh?" He moaned, as he slowly sat up. The voice chuckled and slipped a warm arm around the small of his back.
"You were out for awhile, love, are you all right?" She asked, eclipsing the sun with her pretty, moon shaped face. Gallows nodded and looked her in the eyes. They were so peaceful, like a cloudy sky right before a spring rain.
"Yeah, I'm fine.." He looked around and let his eyes drink in the ephemeral beauty that surrounded him. From the blue sky cascaded a rainbow that poured into a crystal clear lake. The green grass swayed in the warm wind's lullaby and the flowers released petals of gold with each sway.
"Where am I?" asked Gallows, looking at his host. It was then he realized that his "host" was equally captivating. Her long black hair swayed in the breeze, while her calm gray eyes danced with the sun's bouncing light. A simple, black, dress adorned her pale shoulders and a silver butterfly perched contentedly at her breast.
"This is Medius Plānitiēs or the "Mid Plane" in layman terms." She said with a kind smile, rubbing his back comfortingly as she stood up from the kneel that she had been in.
Mid plane? Is this place another form of limbo?
"What does it do?" Asked Gallows dumbly, not knowing how else to word such a question. She giggled, her voice reverberating like a wind chime.
"Well, it is basically a waiting room for souls." She said, offering her hand to the young Baskar. Gallows looked at it for a moment and then took it with an awkward smile.
"A waiting room for souls?" He inquired as he stood. She nodded and smiled up at him cutely.
"Yup." Gallows looked down and gave her a genuine smile.
She's so little. I'm sure she is no taller than Kaitlyn.
"Hey!" She injected, snapping him out of his amused trance. He blinked down at her, still smiling.
"Yes?" He chuckled, covering his mouth with one hand and scratching the back of his neck with the other.
"Are you laughing at my dearth of height?!" She huffed with indignation. Gallows quickly sobered up, but left his hand over his mouth to hide the lingering smile.
"N-No…” He chuckled, removing his hand from its scratching area and putting it lovingly on top of her head. She glared up at him and then smiled herself, closing her eyes as she put a tiny hand on top of his.
"I can still kick your ass though." She chuckled, opening her eyes and looking up at him mischievously.
Gallows raised an eyebrow to this.
"Oh really now?"
"Yeah…" She said, quickly removing her hand from his, pressing her hand firmly against his midsection, and slamming her shin into the side of his knee while giving him a well timed shove. Off balance, he stumbled back, fell down on his rear and was promptly pinned by the little lady.
"Gagh!" He exclaimed, looking up at her sweet, smiling, face dazedly. She chuckled and helped him up.
"Gagh to you too."
Gallows shook his head and dusted himself off.
"Where did you learn to do that? And, what's your name? I'd like to know the name of yet another woman that can put me in my place…” He chuckled, letting his arms hang loosely by his side after giving his backside one more good dust.
"My name is Ephyra, the chauffeur of wayward souls." She said, her expression turning serious and her eyes reflecting ageless wisdom. Gallows, realizing that this was more serious than he had originally thought, sat down on the ground, cross legged, and looked up at her wonderingly.
"So, this "Mid Plane", where exactly is it?" He inquired, his voice brimming with fear and apprehension.
"It is the border of borders. A checkpoint, of sorts, between eternity and mortality. You are, at this very moment, hovering above death whilst reality holds you up by a delicate thread. You are neither alive nor dead. Your existence hinges on your immortal mind.
"My.. immortal.. mind? You mean to tell me that my existence, as of right this moment, is only in my mind?!" exclaimed Gallows, watching as she slowly lowered herself down in front of him with a gentle smile.
"Correct. However, that will change as soon as you make a decision." She said quietly, looking at him with compassion and concern. Gallows blinked and then let his eyes settle onto hers.
"A decision?" Ephyra nodded to this and settled a hand onto his right shoulder.
"Yes, you can decide to move on to the next plane, or you can go back to the physical plane… back to your body." She concluded with a strained smile. Gallows lifted an eyebrow, trying to understand all of this.
"But, I thought that I existed only in my mind."
"You do, at least, your non-corporeal being does. However, your tangible being exists on the physical plane. Hence, while your ultimate form resides here, your "shell" or body, resides there."
"There, as in Filgaia?" inquired Gallows, making sure that he was getting this right.
"Yes or at least the physical Filgaia. There exist a mirror world of Filgaia, a world long lost to human perception; a world known as "Siseneg", which, in ancient Nue means "New Earth"
Gallows blinked to this revelation, he had never heard of Siseneg or the Nue for that matter. There was so much he wanted to know, but, he was also aware that time was of the essence.
"I see… Well, before I make a decision, can you tell me why you looked so grim when you told me of my choices?" queried Gallows, slowly rising to his feet. She sighed and lowered her head, closing her eyes slowly as she did so.
"You were poisoned…” She said quietly, her voice mingling with the chirping of the birds and the sweet song of the wind. Gallows nodded his head, now completely understanding his predicament.
So that's what he meant! That bastard poisoned my drink!!
"He poisoned me to get even… But, why should that impede me from going back to my body? I mean, it doesn't leave me debilitated does it?" When Gallows got no response, he started to panic a little "Does it?"
Ephyra flinched a little and opened her eyes.
"The poison he slipped into you drink was paint thinner… And, one of the main ingredients in paint thinner is methyl alcohol…"
"Methyl… alcohol? How is that different from normal liquor?" He asked, confused as to the difference.
"Methyl alcohol is…” She started, standing up with a grunt, "alcohol made from wood opposed to fermented grain or fruit. When you body catalyzes methyl alcohol, the fumes deteriorate your vision at a very alarming rate. Simply put, when you return to your body, you will be blind… possibly forever…” She concluded, shaking her head slowly back and forth.
