Chapter Six: Eternal Bliss, Finite Sorrow
Gallows slowly sunk to his knees, one hand covering his mouth, while the other lie limp to his side. Ephyra looked at him with pity and knelt down beside him, putting a comforting hand on his shoulder. Gallows looked at her, his eyes moist with tears and his face working with fear.
"W-why?" Came his muffled voice between his semi lax fingers.
"Because he wanted revenge…” was her quiet response. Gallows shook his head fiercely back and forth and dropped the hand that was over his mouth back down to his side.
"No, I mean, why did this happen to me what did I do to deserve this?!" He cried, his voice cracking near the last part of his sentence. Ephyra closed her eyes and shook her head back and forth slowly.
"A trial of true love perhaps? A lesson of differentiating between what you love and what you see? There are so many different possibilities, Gallows, each with their own merit and meaning… You must find out these truths for your self. Now is the time to decide on the path you take…" She said with a wave of her hand.
The sky split in two and the two parts floated down, forming two paths. The first path led to a dusty trail, filled with blood, crystalline tears, and familiar silhouettes while the other was a grassy road filled with sweet smelling flowers set against a background of endless rainbow colored sky.
"Will you strive to find the answers you so valiantly seek or are you apt to take the peaceful road, where all of the truths are presented to you?" She asked, standing up, using Gallows' shoulder as a crutch. Gallows looked at the two paths for what seemed to be hours, although, in reality, it was only several minutes.
"The path we take… is the path we make…” whispered Gallows as he rose to his feet, feeling Ephyra’s small hand fall from his shoulder half way up.
"That's right, Gallows, now choose the path that you feel… no… know is right. I can not make the decision for you…” She said softly, rubbing the small of his back comfortingly. Gallows looked down at her and smiled.
"I know, Ephyra, I know." Said Gallows, rubbing the top of her head playfully before walking toward the path the he knew was right. Ephyra watched Gallows walk toward his fated path with a smile on her face and concern in her hazel eyes.
"Good luck, Gallows Carradine, may the Guardians guide your feet and heart." She whispered as the world around her faded and blinked out of existence.
Down the dusty path he wandered, feeling the air grow colder with every step he took.
He squinted his eyes and saw that the path ahead grew grayer and more desolate every one hundred feet or so. This both troubled and saddened him. Did he take the right path? Was this the best decision?
There is no time for questioning my decision… The path I'm walking is the path I decided on… there's no turning back.
With every step he took, the world darkened, fading away into sepia tones, and then, eventually, nothing at all. He was soon walking on an invisible path, the darkness of nothingness surrounding his body and soul.
Alone. Alone with what I am, and what I am destined to be. This darkness will be my life, and I've no choice but to accept it. Because of him…
He closed his eyes and was treated to a deeper darkness.
But I will not seek revenge…
Even though I really, REALLY, want to…
Gallows shook off the dark voice and then took another step forward and… fell.
The wind rushed by his ears in a steady, unsettling hiss, whilst his skin tingled with the icy cold breath of fear. As he fell, his memories flashed before him in first full color and then mono tone.
It's almost as if my mind never knew what color was… Perhaps it's my minds way of protecting my sanity.
You can not, after all, miss what you do not remember.
Gallows inwardly nodded to this and was about to speak when a shock spread through his incorporeal being with a force similar to that of a well connected punch. He sputtered and curse as he felt his soul meld with his flesh once again. There was a momentary hum and then silence. Slowly, Gallows opened his eyes to darkness, his breath coming out in mournful gasp.
